Guidance for foreign-qualified professionals seeking registration with South African statutory and professional bodies.
SAQA Foreign Qualification Evaluation — The Essential First Step
Before applying to any South African professional body, foreign-qualified professionals must have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). SAQA assesses foreign qualifications against the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) to determine their South African equivalence.
This evaluation certificate is a mandatory prerequisite for most professional body registrations and is also required for many visa applications, including the Critical Skills Work Visa.
Gather certified copies of all academic qualifications and transcripts
Submit the SAQA foreign qualification evaluation application with the prescribed fee
SAQA verifies qualifications with the issuing institution (may take 6–12 weeks)
Receive SAQA evaluation certificate confirming NQF level and field of study
Use the SAQA certificate to apply to the relevant professional body
